Analysis of ‘Seven’ Camerawork:
The film starts off with a medium shot of the main character (Morgan Freeman) which
shows him getting ready for work. Also there was a close up shot of him picking up
his knife which shows that he lives in a dangerous area and also works with danger
close by. The use of the over the shoulder shot shows the audience that he takes
him job very seriously and dresses smartly for it. We know this by the fact that he is doing up his tie in this show as well as putting on his suit jacket.
The scene then jumps to begin with a dead body being shown on the floor of an
apartment, this starts with a low angle shot showing the dead body as being low
in society and then the camera tilts upwards to show the detectives which include
Morgan Freeman, this shows the detectives as being higher up in society as well as
looking more powerful. The scene jumps again to show two detectives walking down
the road, the camera shows this by tracking the pair this also incorporates a two hot that brings into the story a new character (Brad Pitt). In the opening credits
the camerawork used is mainly close-ups as this emphasises the Mise en Scene.
The close-ups used are of someone’s face which is hidden; this intrigues the
audience as they immediately want to find out who this someone is.
